ปิดทองหลังพระ Pid thong lang pra – Do good things without announcing it

One among many of what the King Bhumibol always told people, not only the people working closely to him, but all people, is to Do good things without announcing. In Thai is Pid thong lang pra.

หนึ่งในบรรดาสิ่งที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ได้บอกเราอยู่เสมอ ไม่ใช่เพียงแค่บุคคลที่ทำงานใกล้ชิดพระองค์ท่านเท่านั้น แต่รวมไปถึงประชาชนคนไทยทุกๆ คน นั่นก็คือ การทำดีโดยที่ไม่ต้องประกาศ หรือที่เรียกว่า ปิดทองหลังพระ

Pid thong lang pra literally means to attach gold sheets behind a Buddha image. It’s Thai Buddhist’s tradition to do it when they make merits at a temple by laying gold sheets on the body of a Buddha image. The old belief told, it is for decorating the plain images of Buddha to make the statues well looking. Golden is valued and symbolized of the highly respectful thing like the Buddha images.

Pid thong – lay/attach/stick the gold sheets.
Lang or dan lang – behind.
Pra – in this case, meaning Buddha images.

    ปิดทองหลังพระ ความหมายตรงตัว หมายถึง การปิดแผ่นทองคำด้านหลังพระพุทธรูปซึ่งการปิดทองที่องค์พระเป็นประเพณีทางพระพุทธศาสนาที่เราชาวพุทธกระทำเมื่อไปทำบุญที่วัด ความเชื่อในสมัยโบราณได้บอกไว้ว่า การปิดทองพระเป็นการตกแต่งพระพุทธรูปธรรมดาๆ ให้ดูสวยงามน่ามอง สีทองถูกใช้เพื่อสร้างคุณค่าและเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของสิ่งที่ควรแก่การเคารพอย่างสูง ดังเช่นพระพุทธรูปนั่นเอง

To lay gold sheets behind a Buddha image is a truth realized by the King that if all of us decorate only front-facing side of Buddha images for being seen by visitors, the Buddha images would not well look all over the body. We should start laying gold sheets from behind the body of the Buddha images, the gold sheets will be eventually laid all over the body and the Buddha images will be well decorated and looked at the end.

การปิดทองหลังพระคือคำสอนของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวฯ ที่ว่าถ้าทุกคนปิดทองแต่เฉพาะด้านหน้าของพระพุทธรูปเพื่อที่จะให้คนอื่นได้เห็นนั้น พระพุทธรูปก็จะไม่งดงามทั้งองค์ เราควรจะเริ่มปิดทองที่หลังองค์พระพุทธรูปก่อน ในที่สุดแผ่นทองคำก็จะถูกปิดจนทั่วองค์ จนมีสีทองอร่ามงดงามไปทั้งองค์พระพุทธรูปในที่สุด

It’s the same as what we are working. The job could be done without announcing or not to be told with expectation of compliment and admire, but the job should be done for others’ benefits at first place and if it’s good enough to show itself for people to admire, it’s okay.

เช่นเดียวกับการทำงาน การทำงานต่างๆ ควรทำให้สำเร็จโดยไม่ต้องประกาศ หรือไม่ต้องบอกเพื่อรอที่จะได้รับคำชื่นชมหรือคำสรรเสริญใดๆ แต่งานเป็นสิ่งที่เราควรจะทำให้เสร็จ โดยคำนึงถึงผลประโยชน์ของคนอื่นก่อนเป็นอันดับแรก และถ้างานนั้นๆ จะมีคุณค่าในสายตาของคนอื่นๆ นั่นก็เป็นเรื่องที่ดีสมควรแก่การสรรเสริญยกย่อง

You don’t have to tell everybody what you have well done. You just Pid thong lang pra.

Example, Pid thong lang pra kawn laeo pra ja ngam thang ong. Firstly, finish the gold sheets laying, then the Buddha images will be all over beautiful.
